Frequently Asked Questions Print
istock_000004111604xsmall.jpgBy far the most common thing we hear is either
"I have no signal." or "I have a good wireless signal but I'm not getting the login page."
Roughly 95% of the time these problems occur it's because of one or more of the issues below.
Awareness of these issues will result in a trouble free connection in the future.
You may want to  print this page and keep it with your laptop or travel case.

Misconfiguration

1. The customer is using their own wireless device that is not configured properly, or has old firmware or drivers that need updated. Some users simply need to enter or choose the SSID in the wireless hardware's utility and everything will work like "magic." Windows Updates and Apple Updates need to be downloaded and installed regularly to avoid the old drivers issues. Apple releases updates for their Airport cards on a regular basic, so please update your software. See our Downloads page for links.

2. Users with Windows XP have a unique issue. The XP operating system attempts to set itself as the primary utility for any wireless device. The concept is good but very poor in practice. The customer must view the wireless devices network properties and UNCHECK the box that states "Use Windows to configure my wireless connection." Every third party device will come packaged with software to operate it. Using that software is the best way to achieve a trouble free connection.

3. Security software causes a lot of trouble that could be avoided. We recommend that the customer disable any security programs such as firewalls and antivirus programs during the initial setup and login procedures. Also the security settings in the browser itself sometimes prevents the login page from coming up if it has been changed from the default settings. This is because the login page adds a cookie to the clients machine, and also uses a popup window for the "logout" button and instructions. The basic network connectivity also is affected by these security measures which may actually block the connectivity altogether.

4. Onboard LAN connections also cause connectivity problems. If the laptop has an onboard LAN port the operating system will see it as the default path for network traffic. When the customer adds a wireless device, the operating system suddenly has 2 paths for network traffic, and it will continue to choose the onboard LAN as the default path unless told otherwise. The wireless device may say the signal is great and everything is ok but no traffic will flow unless the onboard LAN is disabled. The user must disable the onboard LAN while using the wireless service so the operating system will only see 1 path for network traffic, the wireless device. They can re-enable the onboard LAN at any time.

5. Proxy setups for office networks are also a common issue. Some business customers have a proxy network at their office that their laptop is configured to use. When that laptop leaves the office the proxy settings need disabled, or set to "auto" because it will continue to search for the office network because that's the way it's configured. Again, the wireless device may say the signal is great and everything is ok but no traffic will flow unless the proxy settings are set to "auto" in the "LAN Settings" of their browser

Low Power
6. Cheaper devices are low power. The laptops that have wireless built into them are not what they seem. Nor are the "over the counter" devices that are widely available at any tech store. The wattage is low on these devices causing the signal to look week or "bouncy". It basically comes down to You get what you pay for. The cards that we provide at the front desk and for sale at www.roamzonegadgets.com are high powered cards. When using quality cards in conjunction with the supplied software the customer should receive a good signal.

Virus Infection
7. Recently we've experienced users who are bringing laptops into our networks that are infected with viruses. Some of these viruses that I call "flooding" viruses send out an enormous amount of erroneous traffic and actually bring the network to it's knees making it appear to ALL the customers on our network that the service is less than dialup speed. We have put a Virus Update statement on our login page telling people to update their machines. Also certain viruses actually cause the browser to malfunction so they have a serious problem getting on the internet at all. Prevention is the best medicine. See our "Virus Help" link for more information.
